The Mighty Wood

There are many trees and woods in almost all faiths that claim spiritual and magical powers. Trees are often symbols and manifestations of Divine knowledge. They renew the life force and give eternal life. Trees are tied to humans as the base of what id highly spiritual. Trees are symbols to the Holy. They are used to understand what is most basic in life. Trees are not only connected to humans in THIS world, read on if u feel especially drawn to tress, the protection of trees and the life they give to us all.

Trees link us to enlightenment. There unyielding persistence through the ages remind us of the connections between the earth and the heavens. They are a powerful symbol of growth, death and rebirth. The exception to this is the evergreen, always green through the seasonal cycles, is thought to be a symbol of immortality or fertility, ever eternal. The image of The Tree of Life or World Tree occurs in many mythologies. Just a few trees in mythology is, but not limited too: 1. Saglagar tree in Mongolian Tengriism 2. Yule Tree in Germanic mythology 3. Bodhi tree in Buddhism 4. Banyan and the trees in Hinduism 5. Tree of Knowledge in Judaism and Christianity

Like all living things, trees breathe, they breathe the air around us, giving life with fresh oxygen. Our spiritual life force comes to us by way of air. Air and breath links trees to meditation and reflection. Stopping, calming and concentrating is of great importance around trees. Trees are often said to be the homes of tree spirits in many patheons. And many ancient religious paths held practice in sacred groves and forests. The tree is the symbol of the World Tree, a massive tree that links worlds together. It is a link between the heavens, the earth and the underworld. The tree acts as an axis supporting the ever expanding cosmos. The best known example of this that I have come across is Yggdrasil of the Norse Myths.

List of some sacred trees: 1. Willow. It is a belief that where ever a willow is a spirit may show itself. Willows are considered sacred in witchcraft due to the association with the movement of the water to the moon. Some Priestesses of the Moon Goddess Hecate, use willow water in their magic. 2. Baobab Tree. Believed to hold the spirits of the dead. Holds magic properties that aid in making wise decisions. 3. Ash. Associated with healing and enchantment in particular to the Welsh magician/god Gwyddion, who had an ash wand. The tree is also similarly associated in Norse mythology to the god Odin. 4. Banyan Tree. It has aerial roots, which spread upward. It represents eternal life. 5. Witch Tree. This tree grows on the shore of a lake in Minnesota and is sacred among the Chippewa Indian tribe. It is a healing and protection tree. 6. Oak. Possesses the power to heal. Symbol of courage and power. The mighty Oak stands tall through all things. 7. Bodhi Tree. Brings wisdom and enlightening. Under this tree that Buddha gained his enlightenment.

Trees are links to hidden worlds, their roots are underground yet provide support for the tree, the ground serves as the gathering place for the trees water and nutrients. The underworld sustains the above parts. The roots of trees can symbolize what we hide from others. try to recognize that these "hidden" parts are an important part of us. As the covered roots of the tree are essential to it, so is our "hidden" parts of us essential to whom we are. Learning about our ancient tree linage is an interesting study, and the use of branches in wands, bark in posions and just a snipit on our alters can bring very fulfilling results to what we are trying ta achieve in our practices. Never cut a tree if can be avoided, but use what has fallen and always thank the spirit of the tree for its help in ur endeavors.
